VENTNOR RFC TO CULVER CLIFF

Passing through Ventnor Town, Bonchurch, Luccombe, Shanklin, Sandown and Yaverland.

"A coastal path that starts high above the seashore and passes through Ventnor and areas of National Trust land before walking along Victorian promenades next to the sandy beaches of Shanklin and Sandown."

Difficulty: "Easy cliff top walking at first with occasional sharp descents and climbs. Ending with a steady climb to Culver Cliff"

CULVER CLIFF TO RYDE (11 MILES)

"Starting at the chalk cliffs, passing around the tranquil Bembridge Harbour before returning to promenades again, with views of the sea-forts and mainland across The Solent."

Personally this will be one of my favourite sections, Bembridge Harbour is beautiful with its mixture of yachts and houseboats. Then through two picturesque seaside villages of St Helens and Seaview before arriving at the more touristy Ryde.

Difficulty - "A fairly level walk".

RYDE TO COWES

Mostly road walking so boring and easy, although Wooton is nice.

COWES TO NINGWOOD (10 MILES)

"A coastal walk in name starting at the Cowes Chain Ferry, but on this long walk you also go inland around the Newtown River estuary. Passing along cliff tops through villages and woodlands, with fine views of the Solent and mainland beyond."

The village of Gurnard and Thorness Bay are particularly beautiful (pics shown), but the views across to the mainland is always something special for me.

Difficulty: "A gently undulating path with only slight inclines along its length".

NINGWOOD TO TOTLAND BAY

The path now traverses the most picturesque side of the island (in my opinion). Heading back up the Newtown estuary to the coastline again with views across the solent. You will pass through the coastal towns of Yarmouth(pic1) and Freshwater before this stretch finishes on the beautiful Totland Bay(pic2) just short of the Needles.

Difficulty: A gentle undulating path with only slight inclines.

TOTLAND BAY TO BROOK GREEN (SW OF THE ISLAND)

9.5 miles, taking in some of the most dramatic coastal scenery including the Needles – the famous pinnacles of chalk that stand like sentinels off the western end of the island.

Then through the coastal village of Freshwater and along the military road with extensive views across the channel.

Difficulty: Several steep sections along the south coast as the path traverses the downs

BROOK GREEN TO VENTNOR RFC

The final stretch passes through Blackgang Chine, St Catherines Point and the pretty village of Niton. With continuous views across the channel.

What is assured is that when you arrive back at the club the warm Nags hearts and the Ventnor welcome will meet you with open arms. A completion of a mammoth task in the face of adversity, we can do it!

Difficulty: A calm walk, a couple of short steep climbs.
